The international research project INCLUDE is investigating the role of sex and gender in how physical activity affects the health and well-being of older adults in changing environmental conditions.
Another aim of the study is to pass on the newly acquired knowledge to decision-makers so that urban planning and policies to promote physical activity can be adapted on the basis of these results.

Climate change and air pollution are among the greatest health risks worldwide – especially for lung health. At the same time, physical inactivity increases the risk of disease in old age and reduces quality of life. How exercise affects people under stressful environmental conditions, such as air pollution or heat, may also depend on sex and gender.
Exercise has a positive effect on everyone, but there are clear differences. Biological sex leads to physiological differences (e.g. differences in lungs or muscles) and social role models influence how active people can be. Until now, research in this area has focused primarily on men, with little consideration given to other genders. In INCLUDE, we conduct research that includes everyone. The aim is to pass on this knowledge to planning and advisory bodies (e.g. urban planning and sports guidelines) and improve living conditions for everyone.
