Research Team

Principal Investigator - University of Basel (DSBG)

As principal investigator, I oversee the three work packages of INCLUDE. I am in contact with the study participants, the team members and our advisory board to ensure that everything runs smoothly. I am particularly enthusiastic about the multi-method approach we are taking to better understand the gender-specific dimensions in INCLUDE. We are supplementing the objective data we collect via wearables with the story and photo contributions of the participants, as well as with the feedback and experiences we gather through our collaboration with the advisory board and the Q methodology.

Principal Investigator - Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH)

My main focus within the INLCUDE project is to capture the perspectives of different actors in the field of urban design policy. To this end, we will conduct a Q-methodology study that combines qualitative and quantitative research methods to systematically examine the subjective perspectives of different stakeholders. This will form the basis for the formulation of policy recommendations and policy briefs.

Co-Principal Investigator, Zurich location -University of Zürich (EBPI)

I am responsible for conducting the study in Zurich. This includes managing and supporting the local study team, organizing participant recruitment, planning and monitoring data collection, and communicating with all stakeholders. In addition, I contribute to the dissemination and sustainable implementation of the results in both academia and the public sphere.

Co-Principal Investigator - University of Basel (EBPI)

In my role as co-principal investigator in Zurich, I am responsible for training and supervising the staff involved in data collection at our study site, including quality control. In addition, I support the INCLUDE research team with my expertise in research methods and the interpretation of cardiorespiratory measurements.

Co-Principal Investigator Qualitative Work  - Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal)

I am involved in several key parts of the INCLUDE project. I co-lead the qualitative work at all three sites and conduct data collection in Barcelona. This includes semi-structured interviews and photovision exercises. I also supervise the translation, cultural adaptation and validation of the questionnaire on gender-related variables in health research into German and Catalan. Furthermore, together with other members, I organize the participatory structures of the project through an advisory board of opinion leaders who will accompany our research over the next few years. Finally, I am responsible for leading the monitoring and evaluation of the project's impact in terms of knowledge democracy and transformative change.

Co-Principal Investigator, Location Basel – University of Basel (DSBG)

As a researcher in the field of digital health and clinical exercise physiologist, I co-lead the INCLUDE study in Basel and work closely with our partner sites in Zurich and Barcelona. I am committed to using wearable sensor technology to better understand our movement behavior and improve the health of the population.

Project partner – University of British Columbia (UBC)

My role will primarily be to advise the project on methodological issues, particularly with regard to the health and physiological effects of air pollution and air quality. As a physiologist and physician, I am interested in the health effects of air pollution during physical activity.

Co-Principal Investigator, Location Barcelona - Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal)

Together with Dr. Laura Delgado-Ortiz, I co-lead the data collection in Barcelona and am involved in all three work packages. Based on my experience in epidemiology, public health and pulmonology, I also advise the INCLUDE team on study design and methodology issues. As an expert in physical activity and lung function under changing climatic conditions, I also participate in discussions on the interpretation of results. Finally, I am actively involved in the development of tools for assessing gender-specific dimensions at the interface of physical activity, ageing and health.

Research Associate - University of British Columbia (UBC)

I am responsible for overseeing data collection and analysis in the first phase of the INCLUDE project. This phase includes interviews with participants about their experiences with physical activity, as well as photovoice sessions in which participants are asked to take photos of their experiences with physical activity and then discuss their meaning with us. Our aim is to find out how older people's experiences with physical activity are shaped by gender, climate change and the urban environment.

Research Technician - University of Barcelona (IS Global)

I am a physiotherapist specializing in therapeutic exercises. In the project, I focus on data collection during the walks in Barcelona. In my work, I concentrate on conducting participant visits before and during the walks, as well as configuring and explaining the measuring devices that are worn during the measurement week.

Research Associate – Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH)

I contribute to the development of environmental guidelines in the area of housing (urban and rural) that promote healthy and active ageing (a sub-goal of this study). I am involved in the stakeholder engagement process, which includes organizing workshops.

Research Associate - University of Barcelona (IS Global)

As a researcher in the field of digital health, I am passionate about everything related to wearable devices and data analysis. Therefore, my main contributions will include the processing and analysis of physical activity data, the development and validation of methods for estimating minute ventilation based on this data, and the implementation of these methods in large data sets.

Research Associate - University of Basel (DSBG)

As part of my work in data management, I am involved in the development and implementation of data collection processes and data maintenance. I also provide support for project management and statistical analysis.

PhD student – University of British Columbia (UBC)

As a research assistant, I worked with the INCLUDE team to develop the design for our qualitative research objective and investigated how older people's experiences with physical activity are shaped by gender, climate change and the urban environment. I am responsible for assisting with data collection and analysis. As a PhD student, I am interested in older people's experiences and perspectives on physical activity, gender, health and climate change.

PhD student – University of Basel (DSBG)

As a sports physiologist with a particular focus on the lungs and the social and biological dimensions of gender, I am actively involved in data collection for the INCLUDE project, both in the qualitative and quantitative parts. As part of my work, I conduct semi-structured interviews and collect data before and during walks in Basel. I am passionate about expanding our interdisciplinary knowledge of sex and gender in sport in relation to climate change and respiratory diseases.
